The City treats its water with chlorine. Lee County Utilities uses chloramine, chlorine combined with ammonia, for most of the year, and studies done for the water industry found that chloramine wears out many kinds of rubber faster than chlorine does.

Alva is one of the last rural corners of Lee County: the rules allow one home per acre, and houses sit on open land rather than tight lots. The Caloosahatchee runs right through it, and Broadway crosses the river on the Alva Bridge, an old drawbridge with speed and weight limits. South of the river, off Palm Beach Boulevard, River Hall is a gated golf community.
San Carlos Park
San Carlos Park lies along US 41, about 13 miles south of downtown Fort Myers. It is a young place where people live all year, many of them families with children. The area is on Lee County Utilities water, so what this page says about chloramine and rubber hoses applies here too. San Carlos Park is not San Carlos Estates in Bonita Springs, and not San Carlos Island by the beach.

It changes what is in the water, not how the washer is repaired. The City of Fort Myers disinfects with chlorine, while Lee County Utilities uses chloramine for most of the year, and chloramine is known to be harder on rubber. On either system it pays to check the hoses behind the washer and the dishwasher now and then and replace any that look cracked or swollen.
