Map of Sanibel and the towns around it.

Sanibel and Captiva share one road to the mainland, the three-mile toll causeway from Punta Rassa, and one water supply, drawn from deep brackish wells by the islands’ own member-owned utility. Since Hurricane Ian, some slab houses here have been lifted on jacks instead of being torn down, and their appliances connected again once the house is up. Our technicians work on both islands, from the canals of the East End to the north end of Captiva.

How Sanibel changes a service call

A house lifted after Ian and a single road in: both decide how a visit here is planned.

  • Houses raised on jacks, kitchens moved

After Ian, Sanibel owners began lifting slab houses five to ten feet instead of rebuilding them. The utilities are disconnected for the lift and connected again afterwards, and owners have used the moment to change the house: one moved the kitchen, another added an elevator.

    What helps

If your house has been lifted, tell us which appliances changed rooms. A washer or dishwasher on new connections deserves a look at the first drip.

  • Three miles of causeway, then Blind Pass

The Sanibel Causeway, three bridges across San Carlos Bay, is the only road onto the island, tolled on the way in. Captiva is one step further, over the small Blind Pass Bridge.

    What helps

Give us your street and a landmark nearby, such as Bowman’s Beach, Clam Bayou or the East End canals, so the drive from the causeway can be planned before the technician sets out.

The only way to drive to Captiva is over the Blind Pass Bridge from Sanibel, and its water comes from the same Island Water Association plant. South Seas, at the north end, has its own sewer, while most homes outside it have septic tanks. The resort has reopened after its rebuild from Ian, with villas, cottages and homes rented through it or by their owners, and outside it we work all along Captiva Drive, at Jensen’s, Ventura Captiva and the big houses of Millionaire’s Row.

Questions from Sanibel and Captiva

We lifted our house after Ian and the laundry is in a new room now. Will you work on the machines there?

Yes, we repair them where they stand now. Tell us when the lift was finished and which machines were moved, so the technician knows to look at the new supply, drain and vent connections along with the appliance itself.

Is Sanibel water hard or soft?

Soft. Island Water Association, the member-owned utility for Sanibel and Captiva, pumps brackish water from the Suwannee Aquifer, 700 to 900 feet down, and treats it by reverse osmosis because of the salt. It describes the finished water as mildly soft: 56 parts per million, or 3.28 grains per gallon, with a pH of 7.6 to 7.7. If your dishwasher asks for a water hardness setting, that is the figure to enter.

We rent the house out by the month. How does a repair work with a tenant living there?

Book the visit yourself or through your manager, and give us the tenant’s name and number. We agree the time with whoever will be at the house, the technician explains the fault there, and the go-ahead for the repair stays with you.

Our place is on Captiva. Is anything different about a visit there?

The number and the terms are the same as on Sanibel. The drive is longer: the technician crosses the causeway, runs the length of Sanibel and then crosses Blind Pass, and the arrival window we give you on the call takes that drive into account.

Which number do I call from Sanibel?

Call (239) 402-5412. Sanibel and Captiva belong to the Fort Myers area, on the same line as Fort Myers and Cape Coral across the causeway. Calls from Estero, Bonita Springs and the Naples area go to (239) 224-3431, the Bonita Springs and Naples area number.

What does the service call cost?

We tell you the fee when you call. If you go ahead with the repair, the service call fee is waived.

What warranty do I get?

3 months on labor for all appliances except high-end. On high-end appliances, parts are covered for 1 year.

How can I pay?

Card, check or cash.
